Deflektioohjaus

Deflektioohjaus, often translated as deflection control or deflection steering, is a concept primarily found in the field of rocket propulsion and spacecraft control. It refers to the method of altering the trajectory of a rocket or spacecraft by redirecting the exhaust plume of its main engine. Instead of using separate thrusters for directional control, deflektioohjaus manipulates the flow of the primary engine's exhaust gas.

This manipulation can be achieved through various mechanical means. One common approach involves placing a movable surface, such as a jet vane or a movable nozzle throat, within the exhaust stream. These surfaces are angled to push the exhaust gas in a specific direction, generating a counteracting force that steers the vehicle. Another method utilizes a flexible nozzle or a gimbaled nozzle, which can change its orientation to direct the thrust vector.

The primary advantage of deflektioohjaus is its efficiency. By utilizing the main engine's thrust for both propulsion and steering, it can reduce the overall mass and complexity of a spacecraft, as separate control thrusters and their associated propellant systems are not required. This can lead to cost savings and improved performance. However, deflektioohjaus systems can be subject to engine performance limitations and can introduce structural stresses. It is a crucial technique for guiding rockets during their ascent through the atmosphere and for maneuvering spacecraft in orbit.
