Deepdene

Deepdene is a historic estate located in Dorking, Surrey, England. Originally known as Chart Park, the estate's name was changed to Deepdene in the early 19th century. The house itself has a long and varied history, with parts of the structure dating back to the 17th century. Over the years, it underwent significant alterations and additions by various owners.

The most notable period of development for Deepdene was under the ownership of Thomas Hope, a wealthy writer and designer, who purchased the estate in 1807. Hope transformed the existing house and grounds into a grand residence, incorporating elements of Neoclassical and Gothic styles. He was a prominent figure in the Regency era and his work at Deepdene reflected his considerable artistic and architectural interests. The estate became renowned for its beautiful gardens, which were meticulously designed and featured a variety of exotic plants.

Following Hope's death, the estate passed through several hands. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Deepdene continued to be a significant country house. However, the estate faced challenges in the post-World War II era. The main house was eventually demolished in the 1960s. Today, what remains of Deepdene are the grounds and some ancillary buildings, which are still appreciated for their historical and landscape significance. The Deepdene Conservation Area aims to protect and preserve the remaining features of this once grand estate.
