Deduplizierte is a German term that translates to "deduplicated" in English. It refers to the process of identifying and eliminating redundant copies of data. This can occur at various levels, from individual files on a computer to entire datasets within a database or storage system. The primary goal of deduplication is to reduce storage space requirements, which in turn can lead to cost savings and improved performance.

The concept of deduplication is widely applied in data storage and backup systems. By storing only one unique copy of a block of data, and then replacing subsequent identical blocks with pointers to the original, significant storage efficiencies can be achieved. This is particularly effective in environments where large amounts of similar data are generated, such as in virtual machine environments, file servers, or email archives. Deduplication can be performed inline, as data is being written, or as a post-process, analyzing existing data for redundancy.

Different strategies exist for identifying duplicate data, including block-level deduplication, file-level deduplication, and byte-level deduplication. Block-level deduplication is the most common and granular, breaking data into fixed or variable-sized blocks and comparing them. File-level deduplication, while simpler, only identifies identical files. The effectiveness of deduplication depends on the nature of the data and the chosen deduplication method. Overlapping data, or data with minor variations, can sometimes be challenging for deduplication algorithms to identify as redundant.
