Debitului

Debitului is a Romanian term that translates to “the debit” or “of the debit” in English. In accounting and finance, debitului is used to describe the left-hand side of a double-entry bookkeeping entry. The term is common in Romanian-language financial literature to refer to debit entries across accounts.

In double-entry bookkeeping, each transaction is recorded with at least one debit and one credit, and the total debits must equal the total credits. Debits increase asset accounts and expense accounts, and decrease liability, equity, and revenue accounts. Credits have the opposite effect: they increase liability, equity, and revenue accounts and decrease asset and expense accounts.

Examples illustrate the debit/credit logic: purchasing equipment with cash results in a debit to Equipment (an asset) and a credit to Cash (another asset). Paying down a loan involves a debit to Loan Payable (a liability) and a credit to Cash. Earning revenue on credit produces a debit to Accounts Receivable (an asset) and a credit to Revenue.

In banking usage, a debit refers to an amount withdrawn from a bank account, and a debit card is used to make such transactions. The term debit derives from Latin debitus, meaning “that which is owed,” and has cognates in many languages, including Romanian.

Balance considerations: most asset and expense accounts tend to carry debit balances, while liability, equity, and revenue accounts typically carry credit balances. The debit side remains a fundamental component of the double-entry system that ensures the accounting equation stays in balance.
