DatagrammNetze

DatagrammNetze, also known as datagram networks, are a fundamental concept in computer networking. They are connectionless networks where data is broken down into individual packets called datagrams. Each datagram is transmitted independently of other datagrams, and the network does not establish a dedicated connection between the sender and receiver before transmission.

In a datagram network, each datagram contains the full destination address. Routers within the network examine this address and independently determine the best path for each datagram to reach its destination. This means that datagrams belonging to the same communication session can take different routes through the network and may arrive out of order. The responsibility of reassembling the datagrams in the correct sequence and handling potential packet loss or duplication falls on the end-to-end communication protocols, such as TCP (Transmission Control Protocol).

A key advantage of datagram networks is their robustness and flexibility. If a particular link or router in the network fails, subsequent datagrams can be rerouted through alternative paths. This inherent resilience makes them well-suited for environments where network availability is critical. However, the lack of guaranteed delivery or ordering means that applications relying on these features must implement them at a higher layer. Examples of datagram-based protocols include IP (Internet Protocol) at the network layer and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) at the transport layer.
