Darbinantis

Darbinantis is a Lithuanian present active participle formed from the work-related root darb- and the typical participle suffix -antis. It functions as an adjective or participle and means “operating,” “working,” or “in operation.” The form describes something that actively performs its function, such as machinery, procedures, or processes.

Morphology and forms: As a present active participle, darbinantis agrees with the noun it modifies. Common forms include darbinantis (masc. sg.), darbinanti (fem. sg.), darbinantys (masc. pl.), and darbinančios (fem. pl.). These endings align with Lithuanian participle patterns and allow the word to modify nouns in the same way as other adjectives.

Usage: Darbinantis is most common in technical, engineering, or formal prose to indicate that a device or system is currently operating. Examples include darbinantis įrenginys (an operating device) or darbinančios sistemos (operating systems). It can also describe processes or practices that are actively performing their intended tasks.

Nuance: While veikiantis or veikiančios can convey general “functioning,” darbinantis emphasizes active participation in performing work or tasks. It is not a passive form, but a descriptive term for something that is executing its designated function.
