Damansky

Damansky, also known as Zhenbao Island, is a small island located in the Wusuli (or Bureya) River on the border between China and Russia. The island has been a subject of territorial dispute between the two countries due to differing interpretations of historical treaties and border demarcations.

The island covers an area of approximately 2.68 square kilometers and is situated near the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers. It is strategically significant due to its location, which provides control over a portion of the river and potential military advantages.

The name "Damansky" is of Russian origin, while the Chinese refer to it as Zhenbao Island. The dispute over the island's sovereignty has historical roots, with both countries presenting arguments based on different treaties and historical events. The most notable conflict occurred in 1969 when a border clash between Chinese and Soviet forces resulted in a brief but intense military engagement known as the Sino-Soviet border conflict.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, negotiations between China and Russia led to the signing of the 2004 Sino-Russian Border Agreement, which resolved the territorial dispute. According to the agreement, the island was transferred to Chinese control. The resolution of the dispute has contributed to improved relations between the two countries and has facilitated further cooperation in various fields.

Today, Damansky, or Zhenbao Island, is under Chinese administration and serves as a symbol of the resolution of historical disputes and the strengthening of Sino-Russian relations. The island's strategic importance has diminished, but it remains a point of historical and geopolitical interest.
