A DVDBlu-ray player, sometimes referred to as a Blu-ray DVD player or a combi player, is a type of optical disc player that has the capability to play both Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs) and Blu-ray Discs (BDs). These devices represent a significant step up in playback technology from standard DVD players, offering higher resolution video and audio playback.

DVDs were introduced in the late 1990s and offered a substantial improvement in storage capacity and video quality over previous formats like VHS. Blu-ray discs, released in the mid-2000s, further advanced optical media by utilizing a blue-violet laser, allowing for a significantly greater storage capacity per disc compared to DVDs. This increased capacity is what enables Blu-ray discs to store high-definition (HD) video content, whereas standard DVDs typically contain standard-definition (SD) video.

A DVDBlu-ray player is designed with the necessary laser technology and decoding capabilities to read the data on both formats. This means that a user can insert either a DVD or a Blu-ray disc into the same player and expect it to function correctly. This dual functionality provides convenience for consumers who may have a library of both DVD and Blu-ray movies, eliminating the need for separate players for each format.
