This notification triggers a process called zone transfer, where the secondary servers request and download the updated zone file. This synchronization mechanism ensures that all DNS servers authoritative for a domain have consistent information.

The use of secondary servers enhances the reliability and availability of DNS resolution. If the primary server experiences downtime due to hardware failure, network issues, or maintenance, the secondary servers can continue to serve DNS requests, preventing service disruptions for websites and online services dependent on that domain.

Furthermore, secondary servers distribute the load of DNS queries. Instead of all requests being directed to a single primary server, they can be spread across multiple secondary servers, improving performance and reducing the risk of a single point of failure.
