DNAmolekyylit, or deoxyribonucleic acid molecules, are the fundamental building blocks of genetic information in living organisms. They are complex macromolecules composed of repeating units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of three parts: a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group, and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), or thymine (T).

The structure of a DNA molecule is famously a double helix, resembling a twisted ladder. The two strands of the helix are held together by hydrogen bonds between the bases. Adenine always pairs with thymine (A-T), and guanine always pairs with cytosine (G-C). This specific base pairing is crucial for DNA replication and the accurate transmission of genetic information from one generation to the next.

The sequence of these bases along the DNA strand encodes the genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. Genes, segments of DNA, are transcribed into RNA molecules, which are then translated into proteins.
