A DNA microarray, also known as a DNA chip or gene array, is a laboratory tool used to detect and quantify the expression levels of a large number of genes simultaneously. It consists of a solid surface, typically a glass slide or a silicon chip, onto which thousands of known DNA sequences, called probes, are attached in an ordered array. These probes are specific to different genes or DNA segments.

The principle behind DNA microarrays relies on the process of hybridization. In a typical experiment, RNA is extracted from a sample, and then converted into complementary DNA (cDNA) using reverse transcriptase. This cDNA is labeled with fluorescent dyes. The labeled cDNA is then hybridized to the microarray. If the cDNA in the sample is complementary to a probe on the array, it will bind to it.

After hybridization, the microarray is scanned with a laser that excites the fluorescent labels. The intensity of the fluorescence at each spot on the array is measured, indicating the amount of cDNA bound to that specific probe. Higher fluorescence intensity suggests that the corresponding gene was more highly expressed in the original sample.

DNA microarrays are powerful tools in genomics and molecular biology. They are used for a wide range of applications, including gene expression profiling, identifying genes associated with diseases, drug discovery and development, and understanding cellular responses to various stimuli. The ability to analyze thousands of genes simultaneously makes them efficient for comprehensive molecular analysis.
