DHCPleases
DHCP leases are temporary IP address assignments provided by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server to network devices. This process automates the configuration of network settings, reducing the need for manual IP address assignments. When a device connects to a network, it sends a DHCP Discover message to locate available DHCP servers. The server responds with a DHCP Offer, which includes an IP address and other network configuration parameters. The device then sends a DHCP Request to accept the offer, and the server finalizes the assignment with a DHCP Acknowledgment. The lease duration is specified by the server and can range from a few minutes to several days, depending on the network's configuration. During the lease period, the device can use the assigned IP address. When the lease expires, the device must renew the lease or obtain a new one. DHCP leases are essential for managing IP addresses in dynamic environments, such as home networks, corporate networks, and public Wi-Fi hotspots. They ensure efficient use of IP addresses and simplify network administration.
