DEET, or N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, is a chemical compound widely used as an insect repellent. It is effective against a variety of biting insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and biting flies. DEET was developed by the United States Army in 1946 after experiences in World War II jungle warfare and has been registered for public use since 1957.

The mechanism by which DEET repels insects is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by interfering with the insects' olfactory receptors, making it harder for them to locate a host. It may also create an unpleasant odor that insects actively avoid. DEET is available in various concentrations, typically ranging from 5% to 100%. Higher concentrations generally provide longer-lasting protection but do not necessarily offer stronger repellency.

When used as directed, DEET is considered safe and effective by regulatory agencies worldwide. However, some individuals may experience skin irritation or, in rare cases, more severe adverse reactions. It is important to follow product instructions, such as applying it only to exposed skin and clothing, avoiding contact with eyes and mouth, and washing hands after application. DEET can also damage certain synthetic materials like plastics and vinyl, so care should be taken to avoid prolonged contact. Its effectiveness and broad spectrum of action have made it a common ingredient in many commercial insect repellent products.
