Cystometry

Cystometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate bladder function. It measures the bladder's ability to store and empty urine. The test involves filling the bladder with sterile water or saline through a thin catheter inserted into the urethra. As the bladder fills, a sensor measures the pressure inside it, and the patient is asked to report sensations of fullness and the urge to urinate.

During the filling phase, the cystometrogram records the relationship between bladder volume and intravesical pressure. This helps identify abnormalities such as an overactive bladder, where the bladder contracts involuntarily, or a poorly functioning bladder that cannot store adequate amounts of urine. Once the patient feels a strong urge to void, the catheter is removed, and they are asked to urinate into a special measuring device.

The voiding phase of the cystometry test records the pressure within the bladder as it empties and the flow rate of urine. This part of the test can detect obstructions in the urinary tract or problems with the muscles responsible for emptying the bladder. The data gathered from cystometry provides valuable information for diagnosing conditions like urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and other lower urinary tract symptoms. It helps physicians determine the underlying cause of the problem and plan the most appropriate treatment.
