These phosphorylation events trigger the progression through the cell cycle checkpoints. As the cell advances to the next stage, the cyclins are rapidly degraded, allowing for proper regulation and preventing uncontrolled proliferation. Aberrant cyclin levels can lead to cell cycle dysregulation, contributing to diseases like cancer. Monitoring cyclin levels can therefore be important in understanding cell cycle control and disease progression.
