Csapadékmérs

Csapadékmér is the Hungarian word for a rain gauge. It is an instrument used for measuring the amount of liquid precipitation over a specific period of time. Typically, a csapadékmér consists of a collection vessel, often a cylinder with a precisely measured opening, and a measuring scale. The opening is usually designed to catch rain falling directly into it, and the vessel is calibrated to record the depth of the accumulated water.

There are various types of csapadékmérs. Simple manual gauges are common in meteorological stations and for personal use. These require manual emptying and recording of the measurements at regular intervals. More advanced automated versions exist, often called tipping-bucket rain gauges. These instruments have a mechanism that tips when a certain amount of water has collected, and each tip is electronically counted, providing a continuous record of precipitation.

The data collected by a csapadékmér is crucial for various fields, including meteorology, hydrology, agriculture, and urban planning. It helps in understanding weather patterns, forecasting potential flooding or drought, managing water resources, and assessing the impact of rainfall on crops and infrastructure.
