Crnogorac

Crnogorac is the masculine demonym for a person from Montenegro. The feminine form is Crnogorka, and the plural is Crnogorci. The term is used in Montenegrin, as well as in neighboring Serbo-Croatian varieties such as Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian, to denote a citizen or inhabitant of Montenegro, regardless of ethnicity. The root is toponymic, derived from Crna Gora, meaning “Black Mountain,” the traditional geographic designation of the region.

In usage, Crnogorac can refer to someone by nationality (a Montenegrin) and, in some contexts, to those who identify ethnically as Montenegrin within the broader South Slavic space. Montenegro’s modern national identity has been shaped by its historical states and, following its independence in 2006, the Montenegrin nationality gained formal status. Individuals in Montenegro may identify as Montenegrin, or with other ethnic affiliations such as Serb, Bosniak, Albanian, or Croat, among others.

The Montenegrin language, standardized as Montenegrin, is used in education, media, and public life, and the term Crnogorac appears in literature and everyday speech to describe people from Montenegro. The demonym is neutral and widely used to indicate origin, residence, or citizenship.
