CrCl2

CrCl2 is the chemical formula for chromium(II) chloride, an inorganic compound used as a source of Cr(II) in coordination chemistry and organic synthesis. The anhydrous salt is moisture-sensitive and typically handled under inert atmosphere. In solid form it is usually described as a greenish to brown crystalline material that readily hydrolyzes upon contact with water or air.

Structure and properties: CrCl2 features chromium in the +2 oxidation state with octahedral coordination in many solid forms, adopting a CdCl2-type layered structure. The Cr(II) center is high-spin (d4) and the compound is paramagnetic. In donor solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), diethyl ether, or acetonitrile, CrCl2 forms solvated complexes like CrCl2(THF)2 or CrCl2(DME), increasing its solubility and reactivity for laboratory use.

Synthesis and handling: CrCl2 can be prepared by reducing chromium(III) chloride with suitable metal reductants in an inert environment. It is commonly sold and used as a moisture- and air-sensitive material, requiring storage under inert gas or in a glovebox. In solution, CrCl2 readily reacts with water or oxygen, forming oxide or hydroxide species and oxidized chromium(III) products.

Reactions and applications: CrCl2 serves as a source of Cr(II) in organometallic and catalytic chemistry. It acts as a one-electron reductant, capable of reducing certain organic substrates and generating radical intermediates. It also forms a variety of low-valent chromium complexes with donors such as bipyridine or terpyridine, which are employed in basic inorganic and organometallic research and as precursors to other chromium compounds.

Safety: CrCl2 and related chromium(II) compounds are toxic and potentially carcinogenic; they are corrosive and can release hydrogen chloride upon hydrolysis.
