Countryyear is a unit of analysis used in cross-country panels representing a specific country in a given calendar year. It is commonly used in econometrics, demography, and development research as a country-year observation.

In data tables, each row corresponds to a country-year; fields include country name, ISO code, year, and measured indicators such as GDP, population, or emissions. The country-year can be encoded as a composite key like "USA-2020" or as a two-field index.

Sources: major international datasets provide country-year data; standardization includes agreeing on country codes (ISO 3166), calendar year conventions, and unit definitions; data may be annual averages or end-of-year values; some variables are inflation adjusted.

Applications: used for panel data models with fixed or random effects; trend analysis, policy impact studies, climate metrics, development indicators, and economic growth studies; enabling cross-country comparisons over time.
