Counterinduction
Counterinduction is a concept in philosophy of science, particularly associated with the work of Imre Lakatos. It refers to the process of devising and developing a research program that is in direct opposition to a dominant or established one. Instead of seeking to refute or falsify the existing theory through direct contradiction, counterinduction focuses on constructing an alternative theory that explains not only the phenomena the established theory struggles with but also the phenomena it successfully explains. This is done by creating auxiliary hypotheses and theoretical constructs that support the new, opposing program.
The core idea of counterinduction is that scientific progress is not always a linear process of falsification.
The success of a counterinductive research program is judged by its ability to generate novel predictions
