Correggio

Correggio is a comune in the Province of Reggio Emilia, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. The town lies in the Po Valley and preserves a historic center with churches, palaces, and streets dating to the medieval and Renaissance periods. Its economy has historically combined agriculture with crafts, and in modern times includes industry and services. Correggio is part of the cultural landscape of Emilia-Romagna, which is known for its gastronomic and artistic heritage.

Correggio is also the name by which Antonio Allegri da Correggio (c. 1494–1534) is commonly known. Born in the town, he became a leading painter of the Italian High Renaissance, celebrated for his refined figures, soft light, and innovations in perspective. He worked in several cities, most notably Parma and Mantua, and his works influenced later Baroque painters and the development of illusionistic ceiling frescoes. The painter's surname, Correggio, marks his connection to the place of his birth.
