Coriosopites

Coriosopites was a Gallic tribe who inhabited the region of the Cotentin Peninsula in modern-day Normandy, France. Their territory was situated to the north of the Unelli tribe. The name Coriosopites likely derives from the Gaulish words "corio" meaning "army" or "host" and "sop" meaning "skilled" or "wise," suggesting a name reflecting martial prowess or leadership.

Little is known about the Coriosopites from direct written sources. They are primarily mentioned in passing by Roman authors, most notably in the context of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. Caesar records their participation on the side of the Veneti in the naval revolt against Roman rule in 56 BC. Following the Roman victory, the Coriosopites, like other Gallic tribes, were incorporated into the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis.

Archaeological evidence from the Cotentin Peninsula provides some insight into their material culture, suggesting they shared many traits with neighboring Gallic peoples. Their integration into the Roman Empire likely led to gradual Romanization, with the adoption of Roman customs, language, and administration over time. The Coriosopites as a distinct tribal entity eventually faded into the broader Gallo-Roman population of the region.
