Corantijn

Corantijn is a river in South America that forms part of the border between Guyana and Suriname. It originates in the highlands of Guyana and flows north, eventually emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is also known as Courantyne in Dutch and Corantijn in English.

The Corantijn River is the largest river in Guyana by discharge volume and the second largest in Suriname. It is an important waterway for transportation and trade in the region, with several settlements located along its banks. The river is navigable for much of its length, though rapids and waterfalls can pose obstacles in some sections.

The river basin is characterized by dense tropical rainforest and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Historically, the Corantijn River has been a source of dispute between Guyana and Suriname, particularly concerning the maritime boundary and resource rights in the river mouth. Despite these territorial claims, the river remains a vital natural resource for both nations. Its drainage basin covers an area of approximately 68,000 square kilometers.
