Cooxidized refers to a chemical process where a substance undergoes oxidation simultaneously with another compound that is being reduced. This phenomenon occurs in redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions, where electrons are transferred between reactants. Unlike sequential oxidation, cooxidation involves the oxidation of two or more species in a single reaction, often facilitated by a catalyst or an oxidizing agent.

In environmental and industrial contexts, cooxidation is frequently observed in atmospheric chemistry. For example, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) can cooxidize in the presence of hydroxyl radicals (OH) or ozone (O3), contributing to the formation of secondary pollutants like ozone and fine particulate matter. This process is significant in air pollution studies, as it influences photochemical smog formation.

Cooxidation also plays a role in biological systems, particularly in metabolic pathways. Enzymes such as oxidases facilitate the cooxidation of substrates, where one molecule is oxidized while another is reduced, often generating energy or synthesizing essential compounds. For instance, in mitochondrial respiration, cooxidation occurs during the electron transport chain, where oxygen is reduced while other molecules are oxidized to produce ATP.

The term is distinct from simple oxidation, as it emphasizes the coupled nature of the reaction. Cooxidation can be intentional, as in industrial processes where multiple pollutants are treated simultaneously, or unintentional, as in environmental degradation where unwanted byproducts form.
