Consuegra

Consuegra is a municipality located in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It is situated in the province of Toledo, approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Madrid. As of 2020, the population was around 11,000 inhabitants.

The town's origins date back to pre-Roman times, with archaeological evidence indicating human settlement as far back as the Bronze Age. Consuegra has played a significant role in Spanish history, particularly during the Middle Ages. The area was a hub for local nobility and was a key battlefield during the Castilian Civil War of the 15th century.

Consuegra is perhaps most famous for its Windmills of Consuegra, a collection of 12 windmills that are identical to those from Don Quixote's famous battles with windmills in the 17th-century novel by Miguel de Cervantes. The windmills have become a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the region's rich cultural heritage.

The town's economy is driven by a mix of agriculture, winemaking, and tourism. Visitors to Consuegra can expect to see a range of historical landmarks, including the 16th-century San Esteban Parish Church and the 18th-century Consuegra Castle. The scenic Route of Don Quixote, which spans over 1,200 kilometers through western Spain, also passes through Consuegra.

Industrial production and commerce have become increasingly important in recent years, with the town's volcanic rock quarries providing a significant source of revenue.
