Conhecer

Conhecer is a Portuguese verb meaning to know someone or something through familiarity or personal acquaintance, or to meet someone for the first time. It is used to indicate being acquainted with people, places, or things, or to become familiar with ideas or experiences through exposure. The verb is contrasted with saber, which denotes knowledge of facts, information, or how to do something.

Originating from Latin cognoscere, through Old Portuguese, conhecer shares cognates with Spanish conocer and French connaître.

Conjugation overview. In the present indicative, the verb forms include eu conheço, tu conheces, ele conhece, nós conhecemos, vós conhecéis (Portugal) or vocês conhecem (Brazil). The preterite is eu conheci, tu conheceste, ele conheceu, nós conhecemos, eles conheceram. The imperfect is eu conhecia, tu conhecias, ele conhecia, nós conhecíamos, eles conheciam. The present subjunctive is que eu conheça, que tu conheças, que ele conheça, que nós conheçamos, que eles conheçam. Gerund: conhecendo; past participle: conhecido.

Usage notes. Conhecer is used for people, places, and things with a sense of familiarity or experience: Eu conheço João; eu conheço Lisboa; eu conheço bem o assunto. It contrasts with saber, used for facts or abilities: Eu sei falar português versus eu conheço o João. In some phrases, know by sight is expressed: conhecê-lo de vista.
