Competitiecontexten (competition contexts) is a term used in economics and strategy to describe the collective set of external and internal conditions that influence how competition unfolds within a market, sector, or ecosystem. It includes elements that shape rivalrous dynamics, such as the structure of the market, the behavior and needs of buyers and sellers, and the regulatory and institutional environment, as well as the capabilities and strategies of the firms involved.

Key dimensions include market structure (number and size distribution of competitors, concentration, barriers to entry and exit); demand conditions (customer preferences, price sensitivity, switching costs); resources and capabilities (technological know-how, brands, networks); regulatory and policy context (competition law, subsidies, licensing); technology and innovation cycles; global and supply chain dynamics; and the broader time horizon (short-term vs long-term competition).

Analytical use: frameworks such as Porter’s Five Forces, game theory, and ecosystem perspectives help map competi-contexts. They guide strategy development, market entry decisions, and policy assessment.

Measurement and impact: researchers may use qualitative case studies or quantitative indicators (market concentration, entry/exit rates, R&D intensity) to characterize competi-contexts and assess stability, potential for disruption, or regulatory risk.
