Cobaltmolybdenum

Cobaltmolybdenum refers to materials that combine cobalt and molybdenum, typically as binary alloys or intermetallics, and also to oxide compounds such as cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4). In alloys, cobalt and molybdenum are melted and blended to form a range of compositions. Depending on the ratio and heat treatment, the microstructure may include solid solutions and intermetallic phases, yielding high melting points, hardness, and wear resistance suitable for demanding environments.

Applications include catalysts and protective coatings. In refining, Co–Mo catalysts supported on alumina are used for hydrodesulfurization and hydrocracking. The active phase is typically generated by sulfidation of dispersed cobalt and molybdenum oxides to form cobalt–molybdenum sulfide species. Cobalt–molybdenum alloys and coatings also find use in wear-resistant components for high-temperature service.

Cobalt molybdate, CoMoO4, is a distinct oxide with uses as a catalyst precursor and, in some ceramic and glass applications, as a pigment. Like other cobalt and molybdenum compounds, it is treated with care due to potential health hazards and regulatory guidance for cobalt compounds.
