Clusiums

Clusiums, also known as Clusii, were an ancient Italic tribe that inhabited the region of Latium in central Italy. Their territory was centered around the city of Clusium, which is now known as Civita Castellana. The Clusii are first mentioned in historical records during the 5th century BC, and they played a significant role in the early history of Rome.

The Clusii were part of the Latin League, a confederation of Latin tribes that opposed the expansion of the Roman Republic. In 494 BC, the Clusii, along with other Latin tribes, defeated the Romans at the Battle of Cremera. This victory marked a turning point in the Roman-Latin conflict, as it led to the Roman Republic adopting a more aggressive stance towards the Latin tribes.

The Clusii continued to resist Roman expansion throughout the 5th and 4th centuries BC. However, their resistance ultimately proved to be futile, and by the 3rd century BC, the Clusii had been fully incorporated into the Roman Republic. The city of Clusium was renamed Aricia and became a Roman colony.

The Clusii are remembered in Roman history for their resistance to Roman expansion and their role in shaping the early history of Rome. Their territory and cultural influence can still be seen in the modern-day region of Latium, which is one of the most populous and economically important regions in Italy.
