Clostridiumslægten
Clostridiumslægten is a genus of Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacteria. These rod-shaped microorganisms are notable for their ability to form highly resistant endospores, which allow them to survive harsh environmental conditions such as desiccation, heat, and radiation. The genus Clostridium is widespread, found in soil, sediments, and the gastrointestinal tracts of animals and humans. Their metabolism is primarily fermentative, producing a variety of organic acids, gases, and importantly, toxins.
Several species within the Clostridium genus are medically and economically significant. Clostridium tetani causes tetanus, a
Conversely, some Clostridium species have beneficial roles. For instance, certain species are used in industrial processes
