Claramunt

Claramunt is a municipality located in the comarca of Anoia in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the central-eastern part of the comarca, approximately 50 kilometers west of Barcelona. The municipality covers an area of 21.4 square kilometers and had a population of 4,453 inhabitants as of 2023.

The geography of Claramunt is characterized by a hilly terrain, with the highest point reaching 428 meters above sea level. The Anoia River flows through the municipality, contributing to its agricultural landscape. The economy of Claramunt is primarily based on industry, particularly the manufacturing of paper, textiles, and food products. Agriculture also plays a role, with crops such as cereals and olives being cultivated.

Historically, Claramunt has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological findings. The area was part of the County of Barcelona during the Middle Ages. The current municipality was formed in 1936 through the merger of two former municipalities: La Pobla de Claramunt and Sant Martí de Claramunt.

The municipality offers several points of interest, including the Romanesque church of Sant Martí, dating back to the 11th century, and the remains of the Claramunt Castle, which was a strategic fortress in the region. The natural surroundings also provide opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities. Claramunt is well-connected by road to surrounding towns and cities, with the C-244 highway passing through the municipality. The nearest train station is located in the neighboring town of Vilanova de Aneu, providing regional rail services.
