Citratlösung
Citratlösung refers to a solution containing citrate ions. Citrate is the conjugate base of citric acid, a weak organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits. Citrate ions are important in various biological and chemical processes. In medicine, citrate solutions are commonly used as anticoagulants. When blood is drawn for transfusions or laboratory tests, adding a citrate solution prevents clotting by chelating (binding) calcium ions, which are essential for the coagulation cascade. This process is reversible, and the anticoagulant effect can be overcome by adding calcium. Citrate solutions are also used in dialysis to prevent clotting in the extracorporeal circuit. In dentistry, certain citrate solutions can be used for remineralization of tooth enamel. Beyond medical applications, citrate solutions can act as buffers in chemical reactions due to the buffering capacity of citric acid. They are also employed in food industry as acidulants and preservatives. The concentration and specific formulation of a citratlösung will vary depending on its intended use.
