Circassiërs

Circassians are a Northwest Caucasian ethnic group indigenous to Circassia, a historical region in the North Caucasus. They are known for their distinct culture, language, and history, which are deeply intertwined with the Caucasus Mountains. Historically, Circassians lived in a collection of independent principalities and tribes, renowned for their martial prowess and equestrian skills. Their society was structured around a feudal system with distinct social classes.

The Circassian language is part of the Northwest Caucasian language family, a group unrelated to Indo-European or Turkic languages. It is characterized by a complex consonant system. Circassian culture traditionally emphasizes honor, hospitality, and strong family ties. Their traditional music, dance, and epic poetry reflect their rich heritage.

In the mid-19th century, during the Caucasian War, many Circassians were displaced from their homeland by the Russian Empire. This event, known as the Circassian Genocide or Circassian Exodus, led to a significant diaspora. Large communities of Circassians now reside in Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Israel, and other countries, maintaining their cultural identity while often integrating into their new societies. Despite the diaspora, there are ongoing efforts to preserve their language and traditions.
