Cibachrome

Cibachrome, now known as Ilfochrome Classic, is a brand of color photographic paper that produces direct positive prints. This means that a color transparency (slide) is used as the original negative, and the process yields a positive image directly. Developed by Ciba-Geigy, the process was known for its excellent color saturation and permanence. The prints are characterized by their vibrant and rich colors, particularly strong reds and blues, and a high degree of detail.

The Cibachrome process utilizes a unique dye-forming system that embeds the dyes directly into the paper emulsion during development. Unlike traditional color papers that require a separate color negative, Cibachrome prints are made from transparencies. This direct positive nature simplifies the printing process for slide photographers, allowing them to create exhibition-quality prints without the need for intermediate negative conversions. The archival stability of Cibachrome prints was also a significant selling point, with claims of long-term colorfastness under normal viewing conditions. The process was popular among fine art photographers and for commercial display applications due to its distinctive aesthetic and durability. While the brand name has changed and the product line has evolved, the legacy of Cibachrome's unique printing capabilities remains.
