Chromalveolates
Chromalveolates are a supergroup of eukaryotic organisms that includes several diverse groups of protists and fungi. The name "chromalveolate" is derived from the presence of alveoli (small sacs) in the endoplasmic reticulum and the presence of chromophores, which are pigments involved in photosynthesis or light harvesting. This supergroup is characterized by the presence of a unique type of endoplasmic reticulum, which is divided into three continuous compartments: the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), and the alveoli.
The chromalveolates are a polyphyletic group, meaning they do not share a common ancestor but have evolved
The chromalveolates are an important group of organisms, as they include many economically and ecologically significant
