Choils

A choil is a notch or groove found at the base of a knife blade, between the cutting edge and the handle. It serves several purposes, primarily related to safety and grip. One common function is to prevent the user's finger from sliding forward onto the blade's cutting edge during forceful use or when the blade is wet or slippery. This added safety measure is particularly appreciated in knives designed for demanding tasks.

Choils can also contribute to the overall ergonomics and handling of a knife. They can provide a more comfortable and secure grip by offering a designated space for the index finger, allowing for finer control during precise cutting or carving. Some choils are designed with a sharpening relief, which is a small radius or groove that allows the sharpening stone to reach the very heel of the blade without damaging the handle material. This facilitates easier and more complete sharpening of the entire blade. The design and presence of a choil can vary significantly depending on the type of knife and its intended application, from kitchen knives to survival tools.
