Chirindicus

Chirindicus is a genus of small to medium-sized birds belonging to the family Muscicapidae, which includes thrushes and Old World flycatchers. The genus is native to Africa and is characterized by its distinctive black and white plumage, with a black cap and white cheeks. The name "Chirindicus" is derived from the Latin words "chirindus," which refers to a type of bird, and "indicare," meaning to point out or indicate, reflecting the bird's distinctive appearance.

The genus includes two recognized species: Chirindicus ruficollis and Chirindicus cassini. Chirindicus ruficollis, also known as the Rufous-necked Flycatcher, is found in eastern and southern Africa, while Chirindicus cassini, or Cassini's Flycatcher, is endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both species are insectivorous, feeding on a variety of insects and spiders.

Chirindicus birds are known for their agile flight and their ability to perch on branches and wires. They typically nest in trees or shrubs, laying 2-3 eggs. The genus is not currently considered to be threatened, but like many bird species, Chirindicus birds face habitat loss and degradation due to human activities. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these birds and their habitats.
