Chernobyl, officially known as Chornobyl in Ukrainian, refers to the site of the world's worst nuclear power plant disaster, which occurred on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Pripyat, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, part of the Soviet Union. The accident was triggered by a flawed reactor design and a catastrophic failure during a safety test. The explosion and subsequent fire released massive amounts of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, affecting large areas of the western Soviet Union and Europe.

The Chernobyl power plant consisted of four RBMK (Reactor Bolshoy Moshchnosty Kanalnyy) reactors, a design unique to the Soviet Union. The accident occurred during a late-night safety test on Reactor No. 4, which led to a power surge and an explosion that destroyed the reactor core. The subsequent fire burned for ten days, spreading radioactive fallout over vast regions. Authorities initially downplayed the severity of the disaster, but international concerns and the detection of elevated radiation levels forced the Soviet government to acknowledge the crisis.

The immediate aftermath saw the evacuation of approximately 115,000 people from the surrounding area, including the nearby city of Pripyat, which was abandoned within hours. A 30-kilometer (19-mile) exclusion zone was established around the plant to limit exposure. Over time, the zone expanded due to ongoing contamination. The cleanup efforts, known as "UkrSOS," involved thousands of workers, many of whom suffered severe radiation exposure and long-term health effects.

The disaster had profound environmental and health consequences. Long-term studies have linked the accident to increased cases of thyroid cancer, particularly among children, as well as other health issues among those exposed to radiation. The exclusion zone remains heavily contaminated, with wildlife populations showing both resilience and unique adaptations to the radioactive environment. The Chernobyl disaster also had significant geopolitical and cultural impacts, exposing flaws in Soviet transparency and leading to global debates on nuclear energy safety.

Today, the Chernobyl site is managed by the Ukrainian government, with international assistance. The New Safe Confinement (NSC), a massive arch-shaped structure, was erected over the damaged reactor in 2016 to contain the radioactive materials. The disaster serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of nuclear energy and the importance of safety protocols in industrial operations.
