Chaulmoogric
Chaulmoogric acid is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in the seeds of plants belonging to the Flacourtiaceae family, particularly the chaulmoogra tree (Hydnocarpus wightianus). Its chemical structure is characterized by a cyclopentene ring fused to a long alkyl chain, making it a unique and somewhat unusual fatty acid.
Historically, chaulmoogric acid and oils derived from chaulmoogra seeds were used as traditional remedies for leprosy.
The therapeutic applications of chaulmoogric acid have been extensively researched, though its clinical use is limited.
