CharibertI

Charibert I was a Merovingian king of the Franks who ruled over the western kingdom of Paris from 561 to 567. He was one of the four sons of King Chlothar I and his wife Ingunda. Upon his father's death, the Frankish kingdom was divided among Charibert and his three brothers: Guntram, Sigebert, and Chilperic.

Charibert's kingdom included Paris, Tours, Rouen, and other territories in the north and west of Gaul. He was known for his marital entanglements, having married several women throughout his reign. His most prominent wife was Ingoberga, with whom he had at least three children, including his successor Chlothar. He later took Merofleda and Marcovefa as wives, which caused friction with the Church.

During his brief reign, Charibert was largely involved in internal affairs and did not undertake significant external military campaigns. His death in 567, after only six years of rule, led to a further division of the Frankish kingdom among his surviving brothers, Guntram and Sigebert, and his brother Chilperic, who had inherited the kingdom of Soissons. This division ultimately contributed to the ongoing conflicts and struggles for power within the Merovingian dynasty.
