Chaldiran

Chaldiran refers to a significant battle that took place on August 23, 1514, between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid Empire. The battle occurred near the town of Chaldiran in northwestern Iran. The Ottoman army, led by Sultan Selim I, decisively defeated the Safavid army under Shah Ismail I. This victory had profound implications for the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, halting Safavid westward expansion and solidifying Ottoman dominance in the region.

The Ottoman forces were numerically superior and possessed advanced weaponry, including artillery and Janissary infantry, which proved crucial against the Safavid cavalry. Shah Ismail's tactics, while effective in previous engagements, were unable to counter the Ottoman military might. The battle resulted in heavy Safavid casualties and the loss of much of their artillery.

Following the victory, the Ottomans occupied Tabriz, the Safavid capital, for a short period before withdrawing.
