Ceriumbased refers to materials or compounds where cerium is a primary or significant component. Cerium (Ce) is a chemical element with atomic number 58, belonging to the lanthanide series. It is the second most abundant of the rare-earth elements, found in minerals like monazite and bastnäsite. Cerium's unique electronic configuration, particularly its ability to readily shift between the +3 and +4 oxidation states, gives ceriumbased materials a diverse range of properties and applications.

One prominent application is in catalytic converters for automobiles, where cerium oxide (CeO2) acts as an oxygen storage component, promoting the oxidation of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. In lighting, cerium compounds are used as phosphors in fluorescent lamps and LEDs, contributing to efficient light emission. The glass industry utilizes cerium oxide as a polishing agent, particularly for high-quality optical lenses. Furthermore, ceriumbased alloys, such as mischmetal (an alloy of rare-earth elements including cerium), are employed in lighter flints and as alloying elements to improve the properties of steel and cast iron. Research continues to explore new ceriumbased materials for applications in solid oxide fuel cells, advanced ceramics, and magnetic materials.
