Celleforlængelse, also known as cell elongation, is a fundamental biological process in multicellular organisms. It is a key component of growth, particularly in plants, and also plays a role in tissue development and repair in animals. In essence, cell elongation is the increase in the size of a cell, primarily by the uptake of water into the vacuole, which exerts turgor pressure against the cell wall.

In plants, cell elongation is a primary driver of stem and root growth. This process is regulated by plant hormones, such as auxins, which influence cell wall extensibility. The cell wall must loosen or become more plastic to allow for expansion under turgor pressure. This expansion is usually directional, leading to the lengthening of cells along a specific axis. Unlike cell division, which increases the number of cells, cell elongation increases the size of existing cells.

In animals, cell elongation is less dominant as a growth mechanism compared to cell division. However, it is important in the development of certain cell types, like nerve cells (neurons) extending their axons, or muscle cells increasing in length. Factors influencing animal cell elongation can include mechanical cues, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix. Understanding cell elongation is crucial for comprehending overall organismal growth and development.
