For example, in "She hit the ball," "ball" is the direct object. Intransitive verbs, like "sleep" or "arrive," do not take a direct object. "He slept" is a complete sentence. Some verbs can be both transitive and intransitive depending on the context.

Another categorization involves action verbs versus stative verbs. Action verbs describe an activity, like "run" or "write." Stative verbs describe a state of being, a feeling, or a mental process, such as "know," "love," or "believe." Stative verbs typically do not occur in continuous tenses.

Verbs can also be categorized by their aspect, which refers to how an action unfolds over time. Perfective aspect denotes a completed action, while imperfective aspect denotes an ongoing or habitual action. English expresses these through verb tenses and auxiliary verbs.

Modal verbs, such as "can," "should," and "will," form another category, expressing notions of possibility, obligation, or futurity. Phrasal verbs, combinations of a verb and a preposition or adverb (e.g., "look up," "give in"), also represent a distinct type of verb construction. The specific categories and terminology used can vary among different linguistic theories.
