Carlsberg

Carlsberg is a Danish brewing company based in Copenhagen. It is one of the oldest and largest beer producers in the world, with a portfolio that includes Carlsberg lager and other brands. The company was founded in 1847 by J. C. Jacobsen to produce beer for Danish and international markets.

Carlsberg established the Carlsberg Laboratory in 1875, a research facility that contributed to advances in brewing science. In 1883, Emil Christian Hansen at the laboratory isolated pure yeast strains and identified Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, a yeast used for lager fermentation. The laboratory’s work helped standardize lager production and influence the broader beer industry. The Carlsberg Foundation, established by Jacobsen, holds a controlling interest in the company and funds scientific and cultural initiatives.

In the late 20th century, Carlsberg merged with Tuborg to form a larger brewing group. The Carlsberg Group operates internationally, with production sites and distribution in Europe, Asia, and other regions, and markets its products under various regional brands alongside Carlsberg and Tuborg.

In terms of sustainability, Carlsberg has pursued programs to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible drinking, including the Together Towards Zero initiative, which sets targets for carbon footprint, water usage, and alcohol content. The group outlines governance through its foundation and corporate entities.
