Caerleons

Caerleons is a term used for the historic town of Caerleon on the River Usk in southeast Wales, and for the surrounding Roman-era archaeological landscape that preserves several major monuments. The town sits a few miles northeast of Newport in Monmouthshire and is part of the city of Newport for administrative purposes. The area is known primarily for its Roman fortress, which was established around the late 1st century CE as a defensive and administrative center for Legio II Augusta during the Roman occupation of Britannia. The fortress site includes remains of walls, gates, and associated buildings, together with one of Britain's best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and a bath complex. Excavations over the years have revealed the layout of barracks, workshops, and civilian settlement that grew around the fortress, indicating long-term military and urban activity.

Today, Caerleons is a popular heritage destination, focusing on Roman history. The amphitheatre and baths are the principal attractions, complemented by museum displays, interpretation panels, and guided tours. The site forms part of the national historic environment and is protected as scheduled monuments; it is managed to balance preservation with public access. In addition to the archaeological remains, the town retains medieval and later architectural features, riverbank paths, and local pubs and inns that serve visitors.

Access is via road from Newport, with on-site parking and public transport links to surrounding regions. The Caerleons heritage landscape continues to be a focal point for archaeology, education, and tourism in southeastern Wales.
