Cadmiumpigmente

Cadmiumpigmente (cadmium pigments) are inorganic pigments based on cadmium compounds. The most common forms are cadmium sulfide (CdS), which yields yellow hues, and mixtures such as cadmium sulfide–selenide (CdSSe) or cadmium selenide (CdSe), which produce orange to red tones. They are valued for bright chroma, high tinting strength, good opacity, and exceptional lightfastness.

Historically developed in the 19th century, cadmiumpigmente have been widely used in artists’ paints as well as in plastics, ceramics, glass, and coatings. Cadmium yellow, orange, and red are among the most saturated traditional pigment colors. In recent decades, safety concerns and regulatory restrictions have reduced their use in consumer products, although they remain available in some professional art supplies and certain industrial applications.

Safety and handling: Cadmium compounds are toxic. Exposure can occur via inhalation of dust or ingestion, and long-term exposure has been linked to health risks, including carcinogenic effects. Proper handling requires protective measures, appropriate ventilation, and compliant waste disposal according to hazardous-material regulations.

Regulation and environmental considerations: Cadmiumpigmente are subject to strict regulations in many jurisdictions, including labeling, occupational exposure limits, and restrictions on certain uses in consumer products. Substitution with non-cadmium pigments is increasingly common. Environmental concerns related to cadmium mining and processing emphasize the need for responsible production, use, and disposal.
