Cachepot

A cachepot is a decorative container used to conceal a plant pot, typically an inner pot or planter that provides drainage. It serves as a cover for a potted plant when display is desired. It is not usually meant to hold water.

The term comes from French cache-pot, literally "hide-pot," first used in decorative arts in the 17th–18th centuries.

Cachepots are made of porcelain, ceramic, metal, glass, wood, or composite materials. They may be glazed and painted, monogrammed, or gilded. They often lack drainage holes and may require an inner pot for watering; many have a removable insert or liner.

To use, place the plant in a pot with drainage inside the cachepot. Ensure there is a drain tray or plastic liner to catch water and prevent moisture damage. Remove plant for watering or check for leaks. Clean as needed.

In modern interior design, cachepots function as decorative vessels that coordinate with furniture and motifs. The term also appears in historical contexts to describe a decorative cover for a planter, emphasizing concealment over drainage.
