CPMn
CPMn, or Cyanophycin, is a heteropolysaccharide that serves as a nitrogen storage compound in cyanobacteria, a type of photosynthetic bacteria. It is composed of glucose and a small amount of ribose, with a molar ratio of approximately 10:1. The primary role of CPMn is to store excess nitrogen, which is then used for the synthesis of amino acids and other nitrogen-containing compounds during periods of nitrogen limitation.
CPMn is synthesized in the cytoplasm of cyanobacteria through a process that involves the enzyme CPMn synthase.
The degradation of CPMn is catalyzed by the enzyme CPMnase, which cleaves the CPMn molecule into its
CPMn plays a crucial role in the nitrogen metabolism of cyanobacteria, enabling them to survive in environments
