COkötések is a term referring to chemical bonds involving carbon and oxygen atoms. These bonds are fundamental to organic chemistry and are present in a vast array of organic molecules. The most common types of COkötések are single bonds, represented as C-O, and double bonds, represented as C=O.

A single CO bond, as found in alcohols (R-OH) and ethers (R-O-R'), involves the sharing of one pair of electrons between a carbon atom and an oxygen atom. This bond is polar due to the higher electronegativity of oxygen compared to carbon, leading to a partial negative charge on oxygen and a partial positive charge on carbon. This polarity influences the reactivity and properties of molecules containing C-O single bonds.

The C=O double bond, characteristic of carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes (R-CHO), ketones (R-CO-R'), carboxylic acids (R-COOH), and esters (R-COO-R'), involves the sharing of two pairs of electrons. This bond is also polar, with the oxygen atom bearing a partial negative charge and the carbon atom a partial positive charge. The C=O double bond is stronger and shorter than a C-O single bond and is a key functional group responsible for many characteristic reactions in organic chemistry, including nucleophilic addition reactions. The presence and type of COkötések significantly determine a molecule's physical properties like boiling point and solubility, as well as its chemical behavior.
